 Nassau County was founded in December 29, 1824 and It was named for the Duchy of Nassau in Germany. Nassau county has a total area of 1,880 km² (726 sq miles). 1,688 km² (652 sq mi) of it is land and 192 km² (74 sq mi) of it is water, much of it in the Atlantic Ocean. The total area is 10.24% water. Fernandina Beach is located on Amelia Island, the county's one inhabited island. (According to the U.S. Census Bureu)
This county is governed by the five-member of the Nassau County Board of
County Commissioners, who are elected to four-year terms by the county voters.
The terms are staggered so that either three or two commissioners
(alternately) are up for election every two years.
The main environmental and agricultural body is the Nassau County Soil and Water Conservation District, which works closely with other agencies in the Nassau County.
